The church of Christ
Conceived in the mind of God before the beginning of the world, but kept hidden from the mind of man until the perfect time came. A promise by Jesus that he would build his Church and a prediction it would come with power. Purchased on Calvary's Cross by the blood of Jesus Christ, the sinless, incarnate Son of God. Became a reality fifty days after the crucifixion of Christ on a day called Pentecost.

The Church is the body of Christ, made up of individuals who have come to God by faith, repented of their sins, confessed the name of Christ, and have been baptized into Christ for the remission of sins. Matthew 10:32, Acts 2:38, 1 Peter 3:21. There is but one Body, the Church, just as there is only one Lord, one faith and one baptism. This one Church is made up of many congregations, each wearing the name of Christ, following a Biblical pattern, and doing things God's way.

History of the Pottsboro Congregation
The church of Christ that meets at Pottsboro, is the result of God's love and was made possible by the sacrifice of Christ Jesus. It is a testimony of the love, faith and obedience to the Word of God by men and women, from the age of accountability through the golden years of life. It portrays a loving, caring congregation of God's saints.

The exact date of the first meeting of what was to become the Pottsboro church of Christ is unknown. When the old Georgetown School was built, it also served as a church building. The Church met there on the fourth Sunday of each month, with other religious organizations meeting on the first, second and third Sundays.

The first church building owned by the congregation was built in 1920 with contributions from area members, including a lot donated by Mrs. Orlena Kreager. the Church used that building until a new building was completed in 1963. The old building still stands at 300 East Williams Street. Grant Harshbarger, Curtis Leary and George W. Driggers were instrumental in starting the building program and after the building was completed, members of the Church who worshiped at Georgetown started worshiping at Pottsboro.

Gospel meetings were generally held during the summer months. Since this was before the days of air conditioning, it was customary to move the seats and lights outside. Tents were sometimes used for these meetings, but for the most part, they were held in the open, behind the church building, under the stars. Because the lights attracted so many insects, you soon learned not to sit near a light. The preacher, of course, was not afforded this privilege, since he had to be near a light to read his Bible.  There were no baptisteries in those days, so when one obeyed the Gospel the baptism took place in stock tanks, Little Mineral Creek, or the Red River.

Preachers who held gospel meetings during those early days included Leland Aiten, A.C. Arceneaux, Burton Coffman, Bob Drennan, Ruell Lemmons, Thomas E. Milholland, Lyle Price, Ceorge Henry Stephenson, A.S. Waller, Paul Witt, and many other outstanding gospel ministers.  Early members of the Pottsboro congrecation included the Atwell, Brodgon, DeFratus, Dickey, Driggars, Finke, Grant, Hall, Hanning, Harshbarger, McKee, Lear, Pearson, Strong, and Taylor families.  Tom McQueen and Emma Slaughter were also early members of the congregation.

In 1949, Carroll Lancaster came to Pottsboro as the first full time minister.  Unfortunately he became very ill and passed away March 28, 1951.  During his ministry, two new classrooms were added to the original building.  Carroll was missed not only by the church but also by the whole city of Pottsboro.  Ministers who followed Brother Lancaster were Russell Bandes, Johnny Jackson, Paul Buehler, Edgar Matlock, Dandy Wall, Robert Sholl, Neal Cosgrove, Joe Crawford, Raymond Cantrell, Keith Proter, Robert Howard, Neal Thurman, James Haynes, and presently Gregg Knight.

In 2006 the Pottsboro congregation initiated a new building program and held its first worship service in the new building October 28, 2008.

Men who have served as Elders of the congregation are Bailey Dickey, Ellery Ballou, Fritz Finke, C.L. Green, Grant Harshbarger, Ben Sikes, T.F. Staggers, Dandy Wall and J. G. McGwire.  Men who have served as deacons are David DeFratus, Enoch DeFratus, Harry DeFratus, Marion Keck, Bill Mosley, Bill Musgrave, Bill Schiflett, Ben Sikes, Robert Sholl, and Tom Tynes.
